Recycling Enterpreneurs
by Terese Hartjoy @ Thorne's World
Ideal Recycling was started in 2006 by Todd Foster, 36, of Leonard, and Chris Edwards, 37, of Warren, who have been friends since they met in 10th grade at Royal Oak Kimball High School. Ideal Recycling contracts with roofing firms to bring asphalt shingles to its site. A separate company grinds the shingles, and the powder is trucked to firms that use it in making asphalt for roads and driveways. Asphalt shingles take as long as 300 years to decompose in the landfills. Because oil-based products are used in the production of asphalt, the cost of traditional asphalt soars when oil prices rise. Industry figures show that use of recycled materials saves $1-$2.80 a ton in the production of asphalt shingles, not to mention all the space saved in out landfills.
