Small electronics are fighting Washington state laws mandating they pay for electronic recycling programs for consumers. The companies argue the law, which took effect this year, charges them too much and improperly includes out-of-state businesses.
Meanwhile, in New York the Consumer Electronics Association is negotiating with New York City officials to change an ordinance that would require electronics companies to pick up their old gadgets from the homes and businesses of consumers. The CEA says the ordinance would cost the industry $200 million annually.
State officials and environmental groups believe electronics companies should be responsible for recycling costs.
19 states and New York City have passed similar legislation since 2003 and the states having such legislation have demonstrated a marked increase in electronics waste diversion.
Perhaps the electronics companies that are complaining should offer some eco recycling programs like You Renew!
