Green House Decathlon

renewable energy green blog

"It's about asking questions and assessing your own lifestyle to live in a more sustainable way."
Jonathon Hanson, Team Boston Member

by Deb Powers

Earlier this week, I linked to a story about the Green House Decathlon being judged this week on the National Mall in D.C. The contest pits twenty teams of college students against each other in building a sustainable house using principles of green building. From my local paper this morning - an interview and photos of my local Team Boston's Curio House. With eight of the ten categories scored, Curio House is in 11th place, but the team has high hopes.

Green Jobs Good Jobs

renewable energy green blog

"It’s encouraging to see that in a dire economic situation, one of the few places we’re seeing job creation is in the clean-tech industry."

Green engineering jobs pay more, and I suspect we'll see wages in the green industry sector rise as competition for skilled green workers increases.

Green Communities Green Economies

by Deb Powers

These days, most discussios of green energy center around one of two subjects - saving the planet and saving the economy. With the economic crisis in full swing - and swinging through to stabilization - the role of green energy in helping to save the economy has taken up a lot of ink space in newspapers and magazines around the world. Green energy projects like wind farms and solar installations are being touted to local governments and residents in terms of how many jobs will be created with the amount of carbon saved taking a back seat. While the focus on green jobs and green economies may be a mixed blessing, there is a lot to be said for the potential of green energy to totally transform our economy.

States competing for green money

by Deb Powers

The funding push for green energy has touched off some major competition for green enerngy grants and loans. Bolstered by federal incentives, many states are offering incentives to both industry and customers to go green, increasing the demand for green appliances, green cars and green energy.
