Green Energy Incentives Pay Off

by Deb Powers

Desertec is for me the greatest leap for mankind since Neil Armstrong’s moonwalk. The hot desert could save humanity."

Franz Josef Wagner, German Columnist

It's a short news item, but it's got a big message. Last year, San Francisco offered incentives to people who install solar energy panels. The results - a 450% increase in applications, making SF the state leader in solar installations. Even better, it's working for everyone from low-income residents who get training in green jobs to companies saving big money on energy.

China builds energy empire while U.S. stalls

by Deb Powers

Once Treasury begins accepting grant applications, the solar industry will create tens of thousands of jobs and spur investment in the clean energy economy.”
Rhone Resch, Solar Energy Industries Association

While President Obama urges Congress to pass green energy bills and Britain faces pushback on renewable energy goals from big business interests, China is turning sun and wind into money The Chinese government has funded the largest wind and solar energy farms in the world and is aiming for higher renewable energy goals. It is now being accused of green protectionism because nearly all renewable energy contracts are being awarded to Chinese companies. The deeper message: green energy is profitable, but the West is slow off the mark.

Brit Business Group: Less Wind, More Nuclear

by Deb Powers

Large chunks of our energy infrastructure urgently need replacing, and we have tough climate change targets to meet."

John Cridland, Confederation of British Industry

The blowback begins. In the UK, the Confederation of British Industry, a lobbying group for big business, is warning that incentives for wind energy and other forms of renewable energy are giving an unfair advantage to renewables and discouraging investment in nuclear energy and "clean coal". The organization, which represents the interests of big business including the current energy bigwigs, wants the government to reduce renewable energy targets from 32% to 25% by 2020. It also wants new incentives for investing in nuclear energy and clean coal plants.

Energy Corridor Lawsuit, New renewable energy projects

by Deb Powers

As we build more energy, we have to be able to move that wind energy to the cities and communities that are going to use it."

Lou Torres, OR Dept of Energy

A Colorado county and a number of environmental groups brought suit against the government last week, charging that the Western Energy Corridor laid out in the last administration endangers wildlife, violates federal law and ignores renewable energy development in the region. The government agencies named in the suit include the Department of Energy, the Bureau of Land Management, the Department of Agriculture and the Department of the Interior. San Miguel County, Colorado released a statement that said in part, "We hope that the Obama administration will work with us to fix the flaws in this hasty, ill-conceived plan."
