Previously, products such as vinegar, salt, lemon and baking soda were highlighted as earth friendly alternatives to environmentally harmful cleaning products. The final household product commonly mentioned in the same vein as the other green alternatives is Borax (sodium borate).
Borax is an alkaline mineral and is naturally occurring. It is usually found in the grocery store near powdered laundry soaps. Although Borax is environmentally friendly, it is not "people friendly". It should never be ingested as it is toxic and should always be kept away from children. There are no toxic fumes however.
Among other things, Borax is often used for cleaning, deodorizing, disinfecting and water softening. To use as a cleaner, fill a bucket with 1 gallon of warm water and add 1/3 cup of Borax.
Here are two special uses for Borax:
- Use Borax to kill roaches. Mix equal parts sugar and Borax in a bowl. Distribute along cracks in walls and under cupboards. Be sure not to allow pets or children near the Borax. The sugar attracts the roaches. The Borax interferes with the roach metabolism.
- Neutralize child's mattress urine smell. Start by dampening the affected mattress area with water. Then rub Borax into the mattress and allow the mattress to dry. Once dry, vacuum up all of the Borax (powder) and wash your hands. The odor should be gone.
