Are Cosmetics Safe?

Did you know that the FDA does not require pre-market safety testing or health studies on personal care products?  The cosmetics industry is self-policed and manufacturers are free to put just about anything into their products.

Some of the chemicals used in cosmetics are suspected or known to pose serious health risks.  For instance, phthalates, a group of industrial chemicals, are used in many cosmetic products including nail polish and deodorant.  Phthalates are linked to birth defects.  Parabens (para hydroxybenzoate) are widely used as preservatives in cosmetics. Parabens are strongly suspected link to breast cancer.  Parabens may be listed as methylparaben or propylparaben, etc.

When these chemicals are applied to the skin, up to 60% is absorbed and make their way into the bloodstream.  The remainder is washed off and becomes environmental pollution.  Many of the chemicals used in cosmetic products are being discovered not only in humans but also in animals.

How should you choose cosmetics?  Read the label before buying.  Look for simple ingredients.  Eliminate products that have petrol or unrecognizable ingredients.  Look for natural compounds.  These are generally easier to remove from our water supply, biodegrade and are safer for human use.  Avoid anything that lists "fragrance" as an ingredient.  Fragrance can include many chemicals that the manufacturer does not have to specify.
