Efficiency of Your Home HDTV

One of the bigger power consumers in your home is likely to be your High Definition Television (HDTV).  The most power hungry HDTV technology is the Plasma display estimated at 0.35W oer square inch, followed by LCD at 0.29W per square inch.  The most power-efficient HDTV is the microdisplay rear projector at 0.14W per square inch [1].

Most surprising is the amount of power drawn while the TV is "off".  An extreme example is the Sharpe 65 inch LCD display which drew 76W while in the off condition.  With other TV sets you can expect 1W or more in the off state.

An excellent summary of HDTV power is provided in the chart located at [2].

Accessory devices such as DVD, satellite receiver, personal digital recorder, etc. usually consume more power than the HDTV itself.  This topic however will be the subject of other daily tip EMAIL(s).
