Refrigerators and Energy Efficiency

Refrigerators are one of the biggest power hogs in your home.  When you buy a new fridge make sure it is an ENERGY STAR model with an energy saver switch.  Here are some other refrigerator tips:

  • Defrost your fridge regularly to keep it working well;
  • Dust or vacuum your refrigerator's coils / intake grill every three months;
  • Leave 5 cm space around your refrigerator for heat dissipation;
  • Check the door gasket by closing the door on a piece of paper then attempting to remove the paper - if it can be removed easily then the gasket should be replaced;
  • Do not put hot food in the fridge;
  • Throw out that old refrigerator in the basement.  If probably draws at least 4 times more power than an ENERGY STAR model.
