Windshield Washer Fluid

There are several environmental effects that windshield washer fluid can cause. First, the methanol emissions contribute to ground-level ozone (smog). The alcohols and solvents present in some fluids can cause corrosion to the vehicle, including damage to the paint, rubber and plastics.
A Japanese research study determined that windshield washer fluid could cause infrastructure damage to our buildings and roads. The damage mechanisms being decalcification of cement concrete structures and the dissolution of bitumen in pavement.
It would be very difficult or impossible to eliminate windshield washer fluids from our vehicles, but here is some food for thought on how to reduce the environmental impact.
First, use fluid rated for the specific temperature conditions that you are driving in. During summer months, you can use higher temperature rated fluid than in the winter. Also the fluid / water mix can be adjusted, more water during the summer months.
Have your vehicle maintained regularly, including inspection for fluid leaks and replacement of windshield wiper blades. Poorly functioning blades will result in more use of fluid.
If you have windshield wipers on your headlights then ask yourself if these are really necessary or a luxury. Regular cleaning of your headlights may suffice.
Fianlly, consider buying your next car with preheated windshield washer fluid. GM is the leader in this area. Preheating the fluid reduces the necessity for use of chemicals to prevent freezing, resulting in less pollution. If you are mechanically minded then you may be able to find an aftermarket preheater to install on your vehicle.
