Zipping Around
Monday, October 10, 2011 at 8:00AM | Zipcar - Revolutionizing A Greener Commute
The invention of Zipcar is revolutionizing the way the world travels. Cities such as Baltimore have reduced the amount of car ownership in the last year since Zipcar has come into existence. So you may be wondering, what is Zipcar and how does it help the environment? The answer is simple. Zipcar is a company that introduced the concept of car sharing. Sound unusual? It really isn’t once you understand how it works.
Zipcar works in four easy steps- first you have to join their service. Once you’re approved, you receive your own Zipcard. When you need to go somewhere- whether on a trip or across town-- reserve one of their cars. You can do this either online or by phone. Go to the location where your reserved car is waiting, and simply hold your Zipcard to the front windshield. This unlocks the doors. Once you’re in, you’re free to drive where ever you want, as long as you return the car to it’s reserved parking space by the end of your reservation. An added bonus is that gas and insurance are included as well.
Zipcar has many benefits, both of which are economical and eco-friendly. If you, like hundreds of thousands of others across the country, are struggling to pay for gas and car insurance each month, relying on Zipcar’s services will eliminate both bills, saving you a good amount of money. Many people end up selling their own vehicle once they join Zipcar- it’s less expensive than owning a car, and is a reliable mode of transportation. You are still able to maintain your independence, with the freedom which comes from not being a car owner.
Most people who use Zipcar report using other modes of public transportation- such as the city bus- to get to the location to pick their reserved Zipcar up. Those who don’t depend on the bus typically walk or choose to ride a bike. This reduces the amount of vehicles on the road, meaning less traffic, easier parking, less air pollution, and, in general, a more enjoyable living experience for all citizens. Since Zipcar has been introduced into the city of Baltimore, vehicle miles traveled have decreased significantly. There has also been a dramatic decrease in the percentage of vehicle ownership. This in turn means that there is little need for home garage doors anymore, other than for storage of belongings.
Zipcar seems to be shifting towards sustainable transportation. In cities such as Baltimore, alternative modes of transportation, such as cycling as increased by 14%; walking has increased by 21%, and public transport use by 11%. Zipcar allows you to maintain your sense of freedom, while changing the way the world travels.
