Think Green

Teach Kids to Think Green

By Lisa A Mason

You cannot begin too soon to teach your children to think green. Just by the simple habit of turning off lights, televisions, and radios as they leave the room, or learning to separate and recycle glass, cans, and paper for the trash collectors, you have begun to give them the necessary awareness of the need to maintain and protect our environment.

There are ways to have them living green without them even knowing it. Instead of driving them everywhere, encourage them to walk or ride their bikes. It is healthful, fun, and gives them great lifetime habits.

Grow some of your own vegetables, and use natural fertilizers. Teach them about making a compost heap. Make sure the kids are active in planting, maintaining and picking the veggies. Not only are they learning something good, but they will be apt to want to eat what they've grown...and it saves you money, too. If you don't have a place for a garden, grow a small herb garden in the kitchen. You will have fresh herbs for your cooking, and the kids will learn the same lessons from it.

While the kids are still enjoying having stories read to them, pick out fun pictorial books about the rainforests, endangered animals, and tell them how those darling dolphins, whales, gorillas, and polar bears will be extinct, and what we have to do to save them.

Set a good example by putting on a sweater or an extra pair of socks when you are chilled, instead of cranking up the heat. And explain why you won't buy that toy for them, because it was made by exploiting children, or slave labor. Your efforts today will help them build a better and safer world for themselves.
