In the wake of the passage of the U.S. House Climate Change Bill last Friday, doomsayers have cropped up in most of the major newspapers. Their message - that the bill as it stands will actually create FEWER green technology opportunities for private investors and result in less climate change than if the U.S. government had done nothing. On MSNBC this morning, Dylan Rattigan asked if Americans would put up with the government telling them what light bulbs they could use in their homes. And all over the world, conservative free market thinkers are pointing to a downturn in green tech investments as proof that green technology is doomed - doomed, they say!
I beg to differ on nearly all of those points. For one thing, much of the criticism of government attempts to spur green tech growth is based on a widely disputed Spanish report on green job creation - a report that was apparently released by a think tank funded by the oil industry. For another, many of the green tech companies forming now are being touted by some pretty savvy stock savants as excellent investments. As far as investments in the green sector dropping in 2008 - can I just say - well, duh? Investments in everything dropped in 2008.
Other pundits are (and have been) complaining that investment in green energy and green technology will doom the economy of developed nations at the expense of other nations that are not embracing green energy and industry standards. The most often cited countries - China and India. Interestingly, if you follow the news coming out of the green industry sector, you'll find that both China and India - as well as many "undeveloped" nations - are investing heavily in wind farms and ocean energy technology with the intent of halving their dependence on carbon and fossil fuels much sooner than 2050.
