Recycle Your Old CDs, DVDs, Audio and Video Cassettes

CDrom.JPG Did you know that plastics production uses 8% of the world's oil supply?  It is to our advantage to recycle as much plastic as possible.  By doing so we will reduce energy consumption and landfill waste.  Pollutants such as carbon-dioxide, nitrogen-oxide and sulphur-dioxide emissions will be reduced.

CDs, audio and video cassettes are made primarily of plastic and today we will examine some ways of re-using or recycling these items.  Damaged CDs / DVDs can often be repaired if there are a small number of scratches.  Repair is the best environmental choice.   You can attempt to repair scratches with toothpaste. Use strokes moving out from the center of the non-label side.   If necessary you can send your scratched CDs and DVDs to a professional restorer.  The fee is small and results guaranteed.

If you simply do not like the CD, DVD, audio or video cassette then donate them to charity.  There are many charities willing to accept such products.

If a CD / cassette is damaged beyond repair then save in a box.  When your box is starting to overflow thensend the damaged items to a recycling facility such as:

The Compact Disc Recycling Center of America
68H Stiles Road
Salem, NH 03079

You should separate the plastic discs, cases, cardboard and paper inserts/covers into separate boxes or envelopes prior to shipping.
