Going Carbon Neutral
Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 1:15PM |
Have you thought about going "carbon neutral", buying carbon offsets from one of the many companies that invest in green projects? Before you pursue this activity consider the following:
Many carbon offsetting companies are for-profit organizations, unregulated, unverified and will not publicize the percentage of capital that actually makes it to the green project(s). There are also often undisclosed conflicts of interest. In some cases there is absolutely no environmental benefit.
This is not to say that all carbon offsetting companies are scams, but there is a tendency for abuse. I won't go into further details but if you want more information then do a google search on "carbon offset scam".
Always investigate how your money is going to be spent. If you don't get straight answers then don't donate. If you have the time to eliminate the middleman (carbon offsetting company) then do so. Find legitimate green projects that you believe in and then donate your money. The extra effort enables more of your money to be put to good use.
